By Bob Acton In January 2023, I became a member of the Professional Artist Institute (PAI) and enrolled in the Professional Artist Accelerator, an experience that has significantly impacted my artistic practice. WHAT: The Professional Artist Institute (PAI) is a globally decentralized organization dedicated to providing real-world education for visual artists, including painters, sculptors, and fine art photographers. Its primary goal is to equip artists with the knowledge, skills, and feedback needed to elevate their professional artistic endeavors. The flagship program, the Professional Artist Accelerator, is an exclusive 1:1 coaching initiative that assembles a team of art professionals to guide you in transforming your art business and career. It is important to note that this program is not focused on improving the actual art you create. WHY: Drawing from my background as a psychologist, I developed various business skills over the years that contributed to building a successful practice. While recognizing the overlaps between my profession and the art world, such as universal principles in accounting, I acknowledged a significant gap in my understanding of the art world’s intricacies and cultures. Lacking formal art school education and without professional artist connections among my family and friends, I sought to bridge this gap by joining the PAI. WHEN: This is a self-paced program, but participants are expected to complete the course within 12 months. HOW TO ENTER: Admission to the PAI involves a thorough application process to assess suitability. THE DETAILS: The PAI grants each participant access to comprehensive information about becoming a professional artist, derived from a program titled “Mastering the Business of Art.” This program encompasses various content areas, including: Entrepreneurship Articulating your art to others Productivity and establishing a prolific workflow Artistic writing (e.g., artist statement, bio, CV, applications) Navigating uncertainty Website optimization Effective decision-making Establishing and growing a newsletter Leveraging email for artistic support Building a supportive community Instagram strategies Problem-solving techniques Collaboration skills Personal branding and art marketing Securing gallery representation Goal setting Identifying and selling to your audience
The program boasts a faculty of ten experts, including: Jason Horejs, Gallery Owner, author of “Starving to Successful: The Fine Artist’s Guide to Getting into Galleries and Selling More Art Rosalind Davis, Artist and Curator, author of “What They Didn’t Teach You in Art School Dr. Rafael Hoekstra, Art Business Consultant Dina Brodsky, Social Media Influencer, Artist, and Curator Vicki Krohn, author of "Art-Write: The Writing Guide for Visual Artists
While I didn’t personally select these individuals, the Institute’s faculty represents a diverse range of knowledge and expertise crucial to my development. THE BEST THING: Beyond the insights gained from video presentations, reading materials, and coursework, the inclusion of a personal coach proved to be the most valuable component. Assigned to me, my coach provided regular email and Zoom meetings, ensuring accountability for completing coursework and offering direct feedback on my progress. Additionally, monthly sessions with PAI experts allowed for input and feedback to enhance specific skills, such as editorial support from Vicki Krohn on my bio and statement. COST: The program comes at a substantial cost, exceeding $7000 for the entire year. GRANT: To alleviate costs, I secured a Microgrant from Calgary Arts Development, covering 50% of the tuition. Leveraging my previous experience with successful grant applications played a crucial role in funding my tuition. SURPRISE BENEFIT: A surprising outcome was the clarity I gained about my artistic motivations, what I wanted to create, and how I wanted to create it. While developing various communications (e.g., website, artist statement, emails, Instagram posts), I unintentionally refined my artistic intentions.
