Cone 10 Salt & Soda Firing Workshop

Location: Medalta, Medicine Hat AB

This workshop aims to introduce participants to salt and soda firing methods. Through hands-on experience and collaborative kiln firings, participants will deepen their understanding of the salt and soda firings process and how these conditions interact with clay bodies and glazes to produce unique surface effects. With an emphasis on learning and experimentation, this workshop will balance instruction, practice, and collaborative discussion, offering participants both technical knowledge and space for artistic growth. 

Partipant Outcomes:

  • Understanding the principles of salt and soda firing techniques

  • Gain experience in preparing and loading kilns for salt and soda

  • Learn safety and best practices around alternative firings

Participants must hold a 2025-26 APA membership. Participants will also need to sign a contract (which will be emailed after purchase) before attending the workshop, if the contract is not signed you will not be able to attend.

Participants will bring bisque work that is ready to be fired to the cone 10, and will be responsible for finding their own accommodations. Participants are also required to be onsite during learning, prepping, loading, firing, unloading, and cleaning. No experience in salt and soda methods are required. Each participant will receive roughly the equivalent of a 1-1.5 12”x24” shelf in each kiln depending on the size of work brought to the workshop. Please do not bring pieces that are taller than 8 inches. Plates, large platters and large bowls are highly discouraged. Cone 10 glazes will be supplied at Medalta, participants can choose to use their own cone 10 glazes. Spots are non-transferable. If you are unable to attend, please notify us as soon as possible. To receive a full refund you must notify Kendra at events.albertapotters@gmail.com at least 30 days or more in advanced from May 12th, 2025.
