Call for Submissions - Teapot Show 2027

This exhibition and sale is open to Alberta Residents and APA Associate Members who may reside outside Alberta.

Application Opens on September 20th at 10am


Welcome to the juried Alberta Potters' Association APA Teapot Show 2027. Please apply with any teapot, wheel thrown or handbuilt, functional or sculptural, to our exhibition! To be considered, work must be minimum 75% ceramic.
You may submit up to 5 pieces. Submission fee is per-entry, non-refundable, and due before submissions close.

This is a juried show, and works submitted are not guaranteed to be accepted. Noriko Masuda will form our jury committee. Teapots that have flaws, cracks or ill-fitting lids will not be accepted into the show.

The juror is asked to review the teapots on the following criteria:

Originality: Is there something fresh and new about the content? Is the work individual and/or personal in its approach?
Creative Expression: Is the piece memorable? Move you in an emotional or intellectual way? Challenge your thinking? Leave a lasting impression?
Technical Skill: Does the piece reflect high quality technical skill?
Surface Design: Interesting/Creative techniques used? Is the composition well considered?
Photo: The photo of the Teapot has a white background. Is there multiple photos of different angles of the teapot? Is there decent lighting? Is the photo(s) in focus?


All teapots entered into the show must be for sale.
The consignment split for sold items is 30% to the APA and 70% to the artist. Everyone is welcome to attend the event at NVRLND. arts foundation in Calgary, Alberta on May 7th from 6-9pm as it is open to the public for our show.

Winners are expected to be at the show at 8:30pm to receive their award.

The four judged categories are: (1) Best Wheel Thrown Teapot (2) Best Handbuilt Teapot (3) Best Student Teapot and (4) People's Choice. Prizes for each of these categories will be given out during the show if the winner is in attendance or mailed out after the show. Prizes TBA.

Wheel Thrown Teapots: Majority of the teapot is wheel thrown. Handbuilt attachments and off wheel alterations are allowed.

Handbuilt Teapots: The teapot is made not using the wheel.

Student Teapots: Teapots can be wheel thrown or handbuilt but is made by a student. Please read on our website about student qualifications.

Application closes February 15th, 2027 at 11:59pm.

Submission Fees:
Current APA members - $15 per submission
Non-Members - $25 per submission
Students - no fee but must complete at least 1 volunteer shift for the event. To submit as a student you must be attending the Alberta University of the Arts and/or currently taking classes at a studio and have been making ceramics for 5 years or less. If you are unable to complete the volunteer shift you may pay the submission fee and still have your teapot considered under the student category.

Artists will be notified of their acceptance or rejection to the show by March 6th. Physical items must be mailed or delivered by April 25th, 2027 for a final in person look over. Items must arrive packed appropriately in a box ready for transport.

About the Exhibition

Common Ground, will feature ceramic art that celebrates connection, community and the diverse voices of Alberta's ceramic artists. As an organization dedicated to supporting potters and ceramic artists across the province, our goal is to showcase exceptional artwork while fostering meaningful dialogue within the arts community.

Theme

Common Ground offers a moment to reflect on connection and shared experience forged through clay. Rooted in ancient tradition yet continually evolving, ceramic art provides a powerful lens to explore the medium and unity of clay. This exhibition highlights the strength and diversity of Alberta’s ceramic arts community while fostering meaningful dialogue across perspectives and practices.

Artist Presentations

Artists are encouraged to attend the opening receptions and share their stories, ideas and inspiration behind their work with fellow members and visitors to the exhibition(s).

ACC is also exploring opportunities for artist demonstrations and talks during the Calgary exhibition.

Application Guidelines

Eligibility

  • Open to all APA members in good standing at both the time of submission and during the exhibition.

Submission Requirements

  1. Open to all APA members in good standing.

  2. Submitted works must be primarily ceramic. Both functional and sculptural works are eligible.

  3. Submissions will only be accepted through the APA Art Call.

  4. Each submission must include a max. 100-word artwork statement.

  5. Image files must be in the form as detailed in the Image File Specifications section below.

  6. All work must be original. 

  7. Pieces may not have been created as part of a class or workshop or have been displayed at APA/ACC/Medalta previously. 

Image File Specifications

  1. Images must show the artwork only, without background elements. Use a neutral white or professional gradient background.

  2. Images must be clear, crisp, clean and accurate representations of the work submitted.

  3. Images must be free of date stamps, watermarks, copyright symbols or any other markings that may obstruct the image.

  4. Photos should be taken from multiple angles. 

  5. Image files should be appropriately labelled: APA_2027_Common-Groun-Exhibition_[Artist]_[Title of Work].[file type].

Images submitted with your application may be used by APA, ACC and/or Medalta for both print and digital promotion. 

Jury Process

Works will be selected based on:

  • Artistic merit

  • Technical excellence

  • Relevance to the exhibition theme

  • Contribution to overall exhibition cohesion

The APA is committed to representing diverse artistic voices, career stages and regional perspectives from across Alberta.

Exhibition Contract

  • Artists are responsible for shipping work to the Edmonton or Calgary ACC offices prior to the April 1 deadline and for the shipping or retrieval of work from the location indicated in the application when the exhibition is complete. 

  • Accepted pieces are committed for the duration of the exhibition.

  • Items must arrive packaged securely and appropriately, ready for transport by a courier or risk being excluded from the show. 

  • This exhibition will accept both works for exhibition only and works for sale at a split of 60% payable to the artist and 40% retained by the galleries for their programming. 

  • Submission fees must be paid in full prior to the submission deadline.

  • Submission fees are non refundable and per submission.

  • Submission fee does not guarantee acceptance into the exhibition.

  • Only finished work will be accepted. Pieces can not be altered, fired or re-fired after submission. No substitutions will be accepted.

  • The APA, ACC and/or Medlata reserve the right not to display pieces that differ significantly from the submitted image or do not present to a professional standard.

  • All pieces must be gallery-ready for installation complete with installation instructions and specific hardware if required.

  • Each piece must be clearly and securely labelled with the name of the artist and title of the work.

Liability and Insurance

  • The listed price of the piece should reflect its insurance value (as obtained by the artist).

  • While the APA, ACC, Medalta staff and volunteers take every effort to ensure careful handling, the APA, ACC, and/or Medalta are not responsible for any damage, breakage, theft or loss to any pieces. Submission is at the risk of the artist.

  • Insurance of pieces is the responsibility of the artist and at their discretion.

Transportation Protocol

Artists are responsible for ensuring that their artwork is appropriately and securely packaged for transportation.

Artists are responsible for delivering their artwork, at their own expense, to either of the designated Edmonton or Calgary locations and for picking up their pieces at the location designated in their application following the exhibition.

Artwork will be transported between the three galleries for the exhibitions at no expense to the artist. Following the completion of the exhibitions, artwork will be held at ACC in Edmonton/Calgary and Medalta for pick up as indicated in the artist application.

How to Apply

  • Submissions accepted through APA ArtCall.

  • Fee: $40 per entry, paid through APA ArtCall.

  • Submission fee is per-entry, non-refundable and due before submissions close Feb 1.

  • Submissions must include high quality photos with a neutral background.

Salt and Soda Workshop

Salt and Soda Workshop is back!

This workshop aims to introduce participants to salt and soda firing methods. Through hands-on experience and collaborative kiln firings, participants will deepen their understanding of the salt and soda firings process and how these conditions interact with clay bodies and glazes to produce unique surface effects. With an emphasis on learning and experimentation, this workshop will balance instruction, practice, and collaborative discussion, offering participants both technical knowledge and space for artistic growth. 

Partipant Outcomes:

  • Understanding the principles of salt and soda firing techniques

  • Gain experience in preparing and loading kilns for salt and soda

  • Learn safety and best practices around alternative firings

Timeline:

Day 1 - Learning and Prep (learn about the firing process, glaze your pots, and start preparing for the next four days!)

Day 2 - Load and Candle

Day 3 - Fire!!

Day 4 - Day off while the kiln cools

Day 5 - Unload and clean up

Important Info:

The cost of the workshop: $250. Participants must hold a 2025-26 APA membership. Participants will bring bisque work that is ready to be fired to the cone 10, and will be responsible for finding their own accommodations. Participants are also required to be onsite during learning, prepping, loading, firing, unloading, and cleaning. No experience in salt and soda methods are required. The Teapot Show - Call for Submissions

This exhibition and sale is open to Alberta Residents and APA Associate Members who may reside outside Alberta.

Application Opens on November 21st at 10am


Welcome to the juried Alberta Potters' Association APA Teapot Show 2026. Please apply with any teapot, wheel thrown or handbuilt, functional or sculptural, to our exhibition! To be considered, work must be minimum 75% ceramic.
You may submit up to 5 pieces. Submission fee is per-entry, non-refundable, and due before submissions close. Please pay the submission fee via our website before the submission deadline.

This is a juried show, and works submitted are not guaranteed to be accepted. There will be three jurors who will form our jury committee. Teapots that have flaws, cracks or ill-fitting lids will not be accepted into the show.

Judges are asked to review the teapots on the following criteria:

Originality: Is there something fresh and new about the content? Is the work individual and/or personal in its approach?
Creative Expression: Is the piece memorable? Move you in an emotional or intellectual way? Challenge your thinking? Leave a lasting impression?
Technical Skill: Does the piece reflect high quality technical skill?
Surface Design: Interesting/Creative techniques used? Is the composition well considered?
Photo: Is there multiple photos of different angles of the teapot? Is there decent lighting? Photo is clear with little to no clutter in the background? Is the photo(s) in focus?


All teapots entered into the show must be for sale.
The consignment split for sold items is 30% to the APA and 70% to the artist. Everyone is welcome to attend the event at NVRLND. arts foundation in Calgary, Alberta on May 1st from 6-9pm as it is open to the public for our show.

Winners are expected to be at the show at 7pm to receive their award.

The four judged categories are: (1) Best Wheel Thrown Teapot (2) Best Handbuilt Teapot (3) Best Student Teapot and (4) People's Choice. Prizes for each of these categories will be given out during the show if the winner is in attendance or mailed out after the show. Prizes TBA.

Wheel Thrown Teapots: Majority of the teapot is wheel thrown. Handbuilt attachments and off wheel alterations are allowed.

Handbuilt Teapots: The teapot is made not using the wheel.

Student Teapots: Teapots can be wheel thrown or handbuilt but is made by a student. Please read on our website about student qualifications.

Application closes February 9th at 11:59pm.

Submission Fees:
Current APA members - $15 per submission
Non-Members - $25 per submission
Students - no fee but must complete at least 1 volunteer shift for the event. To submit as a student you must be attending the Alberta University of the Arts and/or currently taking classes at a studio and have been making ceramics for 5 years or less. If you are unable to complete the volunteer shift you may pay the submission fee and still have your teapot considered under the student category.

Artists will be notified of their acceptance or rejection to the show by March 6th. Physical items must be mailed or delivered by April 17th, 2026 for a final in person jury. Items must arrive packed appropriately in a box ready for transport.

Want to be a vendor at our upcoming APA Winter Pottery Sale?

All vendors must be a current APA member. A current list of members is posted on the APA website.

Vendor Registration will open on Friday, August 29th at 10:00am here

When: November 14th set up 3:30-4:45pm Sale runs from 5pm-9pm AND November 15th 10-4pm and tear down 4pm-5pm.
Where: Marda Loop Community Association (3130 16 St SW, Calgary, AB)

Booth Options:

Single - $120 (one 8’ table, one single per purchase, waitlist for additional singles will be available)

Corner - $200 (two 6’ tables in a L or inverted L configuration)

Registration is first-come first-serve. When payment is confirmed, your spot is secured. A follow up email will be sent with detailed information about logistics of the sale day.

Important Info:

  • Singles and Corners may be shared between a maximum of two potters, both must be a current APA member.

  • Each vendor is responsible for providing their own table cloth (table cloths available to rent), display, packing materials and POS system.

  • It is advised to have a payment system in place to take online payments.

  • Tables will be provided, single tables are 8’ and corner tables are two 6’

  • Set up will begin at 3:30pm on November 14th.

APA will advertise the show locally and online on behalf of the artists.

Salt & Soda Firing Workshop

This workshop aims to introduce participants to salt and soda firing methods. Through hands-on experience and collaborative kiln firings, participants will deepen their understanding of the salt and soda firings process and how these conditions interact with clay bodies and glazes to produce unique surface effects. With an emphasis on learning and experimentation, this workshop will balance instruction, practice, and collaborative discussion, offering participants both technical knowledge and space for artistic growth. 

Partipant Outcomes:

  • Understanding the principles of salt and soda firing techniques

  • Gain experience in preparing and loading kilns for salt and soda

  • Learn safety and best practices around alternative firings

Timeline:

Day 1 - Learning and Prep (learn about the firing process, glaze your pots, and start preparing for the next four days!)

Day 2 - Load and Candle

Day 3 - Fire!!

Day 4 - Day off while the kiln cools

Day 5 - Unload and clean up

The cost of the workshop: $200. Participants must hold a 2025-26 APA membership. Participants will bring bisque work that is ready to be fired to the cone 10, and will be responsible for finding their own accommodations. Participants are also required to be onsite during learning, prepping, loading, firing, unloading, and cleaning. No experience in salt and soda methods are required. The Alberta Potters’ Association and Village Brewery invite you to Oktoberfest our annual Stein Show and Sale, which will showcase incredibly talented ceramicists and potters from Alberta.

The Alberta Potters' Association invites you to apply for our 2025 juried exhibition, The Stein Show. Our exhibition will take place on September 27th, 2025 at Village Brewery in Calgary, Alberta.
